The Community Emergency Preparedness Information Network
is
designed to promote awareness in emergency preparedness activities and
encourages networking among emergency responders and the deaf and hard
of hearing community.  Educating both the responder (EMS, Fire and Police)
and those with hearing loss is their primary goal.  Those of us who CAN hear -
often take that ability for granted.  Imagine what it would be like to NOT hear...
how would you know of an emergency or disaster in your community?  Do you
know of anyone in your area who may be affected?  What can you do to
assist
them?  What if you had just one person that was deaf... how would you
communicate with them?  Now, what if there were a bus load?  What then?
Do you know ASL (American Sign Language)?   Do you know if there is even
a sign language interpreter in your area?

Don't wait until something happens - only to find you aren't prepared!

To learn how to best respond to your community's needs, and to attend
an Emergency Responders and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community:
Taking the First Steps to Disaster Preparedness
course, please contact
CEPIN at: www.cepintdi.org/.

Over 28 million Americans cope with the daily challenges that arise as a result
of their having some degree of hearing loss.  In emergency situations, the
obstacles emergency responders face when trying to communicate quickly with
someone with a hearing loss is just as striking.  Often, spoken (audible)
communication is misleading; as lip-reading is barely effective, and emergency
situations usually include sirens & alarms - making any
residual hearing almost useless!

Remember, when seconds count - using
a simple, and mutually understood
form of communication
always
proves best!

In an effort to better assist our fellow
EMS, Fire Service & Law Enforcement
personnel in
communicating with the
Deaf Community, we offer our exclusive American Sign Language (ASL) Finger-Spelling Handy Pocket Quick-Reference Card.  It provides easy
to see and understand hand positions
of each ASL alphabet letter, thus making learning how to finger-spell easier
and more familiar.
